|18 individuals in front of a court in Nigeria stood accused of downloading and sharing local movies without permission, and last week each was quickly sentenced to 45 days in jail. Following a complaint from the local Hausa Film Makers Association, the file-sharers were arrested under suspicion of online piracy of so-called Kannywood films – movies produced by the local Hausa-language movie industry.
A paramilitary agency of the Nigerian government took care of the prosecution, and the defenders showed up in court a few days ago, charged with unlawfully downloading and sharing the movies. It was quick: when the one-count charge of piracy was read to them, they all pleaded guilty, and the judge sentenced them to 45 days imprisonment or to pay a fine of N12,000 each. Although the fine is equal to $40 (in Nigeria it isn’t small money), any period in jail for sharing a movie was really surprising for Nigeria, which places no priority on burglary offenses and does not enforce its own traffic laws.
The US classifies Nigeria as having a “critical” crime rate. This is why it remains unclear why piracy receives any attention there, despite the reported “zero tolerance” stance. One suggestion was that downloading local films was an act that contravenes a section of Censorship Board laws.
Nigeria’s Censorship Board regularly bans songs and forbids their downloading, so when it suits the authorities, it can be used to deal with the information-spreading users. The Board claims that the cheapest way of corrupting the local cultural base is through the use of tools of mass media: Internet, TV, adverts, movies, and even through assorted literary works, with these “tools of mass mind control and corruption” being targeted on the youths.

Tools of mass mind control and corruption... are we talking about Rock and Roll or Porn ???
Either way, I wish I had the internet when I was young and innocent ... Mind control - well` thats just good old Blues Rock Music. Rock `n Roll - now this was the creation of corruption; perhaps! But you have to admit ... it is a good time to be had by all who indulge in this sort of "culture".
Hey - I recall old NatGeo magazines, with images of young African maidens dancing `round the ole` firepit and swinging their hips to blues music ( Nigerians created the blues:) it`s a fact look it up)
MIlitary muscle in charge of a country full of suppressed citizens... phew!
Nigeria is off my holiday plans.
|"A paramilitary agency of the Nigerian government took care of the prosecution"|
And all of the people simply decided to plead guilty and go to jail? Does this smell a little fishy to anyone else?? Since when does it take a paramilitary agency to take care of prosecution?
"A paramilitary agency of the Nigerian government took care of scaring the citizens into pleading guilty and going to jail without a fuss - as an example to all the other people." Yep, that sounds about right.
