US anti-piracy group Rightscorp has been awarded a patent by the Australian Patent Office
for a method of tracking internet piracy.
Rightscorp is known for its investigations of BitTorrent and other peer to peer networks. It sends notices to internet services providers
(ISPs), threatening penalties of up to $150,000 for copyright violations, hoping the notices are passed onto consumers.
It works like this: users accused by Rightscorp are found via IP addresses appearing in BitTorrent download swarms. If ISPs agree to forward Rightscorp's notices—and an increasing number of them are doing so—the users get notices that they could be liable for $150,000 in damages. Unless, that is, they click on a provided link and agree to settle their case at a low, low price. Typically, it's $20 per song infringed.
A good example is the recent case of the producers of movie Dallas Buyers Club, who won the right to send letters to Australians who had illegally downloaded the movie
. The court will review the letters to make sure there is no “speculative invoicing” – claiming that individuals could face penalties far in excess of the cost to the company.
ExtraTorrent recommends using VPN
to hide your real location while torernting and downloading the files. Anonymous VPN
changes your IP address with IP address of the VPN server and keep you anonymous on the Internet, so, it hides your real location and your online identity.
With a VPN you will never receive copyright infringement notices
from your ISP or government agencies because your real location is hidden.
Keep in mind that the safest VPN services
don't log online activity of the users. They accept anonymous payments via BitCoin. Anoymous VPN services
are usually located in the countries which have no mandatory data retention laws like Seychelles, Cyprus and other small island countries.

use trust-zone and then stay relax !!
Then remember not to do what I have done. I like to bounce around the globe on my VPN which means I often disconnect and reconnect or just stop for 30 mins and resume. Which means sometimes I have my torrent client open but VPN off. I recently noticed one torrent that was seeding. It must have been seeding for days without my knowledge and seeding without the VPN on.
Whoops. BTW Always double check your VPN IS working. I had my little icon showing my VPN was running but when I double checked (what is my IP location websites) the VPN wasn't shielding me! Spent time with support to configure this n that and now all seems OK. But I still double check!
And while I'm about it (LOL) how exactly do THEY figure "per pirated song" or anything.
Say I'm torrenting the latest ETRG which is for argument's sake an Audio CD rip with 10 songs each 10mb. If THEY spot me 2mins in with a DL of 50mb and a UL of 10mb how exactly do they figure how many songs I have pirated because as you know the data DL is across all songs as is the UL. A 10mb UL would not even be a single song. On average it would be an unusable tenth of every song on the album. How does that relate to "per pirated song" because at that point the data is not equivalent to any retail value. Same with a movie is THEY spot you have UL a tenth of a movie. That data has no retail value and is worthless until you have a full movie and have UL a full movie...how do THEY figure that out?

Too bad, I will stick to uploading what I like to peeps who like what I like.
How do they like that?
A lot. LOL
I wonder how often they are able to extract blood from stones?
Cause they would have a better chance of getting the blood, before I would give them anything other than my undying hate. And my wish that they die screaming, while in flames.
Lawyer to client, Sorry we didn't get back as much as we thought
But here's our bill anyway's
The only people who make money are the lawyers and record companies. the artists get a fraction.

I love this one, it was used for an RCMP scam in canada for copyright infringements, a screen that is a poop up and blocks your control, virus of course saying that if you pay $20 then they will not charge you, I had to fix this problem with someone else's computer and just re-installed their windows while using another machine to recover the personal data. This is done by putting the program in the header before you launch the video, change the extension to zip and then use an archive manager if your so worried. Ps. skip the vpn crap and just ban their servers unless the free stuff is that important. Happy torrenting

So how is everyone downloading songs? If you listen on YouTube is that considered downloading?
Wow these artists must be rolling in money if a single person shared song is worth 150,000 USD. A 10 track cd would be worth one million USD. Say they sell only 50,000 copies that's about worth 50 million for a flop!

I wonder how the corporations plan to lever money from under 20 jobless kids in any real volume...in court? haha no kids turn up to court here they would be chasing their tails from day one.
Why would I trust a company to recommend a VPN to me ,
when they already try to load malware onto my system via their adverts on everything clickable...
Including the 'login' buttons.
VPN are NOT anonymous... even worse they open you for more liability., since YOU opened your VPN account and it is traceable back to a given user.
Better you just claim someone used your wireless connection.
I use PIA but here lately vuze has been popping a little emblem up and says chk anonymous and privacy in tools. Does anyone have an answer to this and am I being exposed in anyway?

I use protectii and utorrent. Not a single notice in many years of use. It used to be on megaupload, but not sure now. It just jacks your IP and throws lots of bogus ones while using utorrent. Not sure why it only works with utorrent, but I really don't care what torrent app I use as long as it doesn't show my real IP.
As I am new to actually having a user name here, but used this site for many years, I have requested to get it up again here as a torrent, but do not know if they'll let me upload it yet.
Try searching the net for it, it works as advertised for me

So if you use a VPN what is stopping the rights holder taking the owner of the VPN to court whose IP Address you are utilising for knowingly letting users access copyright material through the service - eg. That's what they stung for Megaupload for.
Also the user database of this site IS NOT encrypted. Go and request your login details and it sends the full username and password over email. Pretty naughty for a site that advocates online anonymity and protection. Just sayin.
I'm a child of the 60's between '70 and wen CD's c came along I bought approx. 350 - 400 albums, cassettes & yes even a few 8 tracks. By law I am allowed to make, record & now D/L a back-up copy of everything I bought so if they wanna go thru all my pre-owned music & I had my basement flooded & lost a lot of music that way so they would have to prove that I had not bot anything that I have D/L that was recorded between '65 & early 90's. Even after CD's came out I still bot Albums from 2nd hand stores because I still like to throw an album on the turntable and listen to it the way I did wen I was younger. Even with the hiss & pops & other extra noises!!
It wouldn't be worth it for them to take it to court so they can KISS MY Metal ASS!!!
Just had a quick look at protectii. Looks like an IP filter. Assuming you need to rely on others to update their lists and then know what lists you want to load. A VPN is much easier. Click run. Click connect. Done.
dingoTV iirc PIA claim not to monitor what ppl are transfering so 'how are we to know user x was pirating abc...its not in our policy to monitor'. Plus they use one IP for multiple users so even more difficult to drill down.
Not sure what the user database encryption thing is about? I made an email just for this site and accessed (I hope) thru VPN all times.

$150k in Penalties Per Downloaded Song? Wow!
I use PIA VPN & ALWAYS USE THE KILL SWITCH when downloading or seeding. As far as I know PIA is the only service which has a KILL SWITCH, even though they tell you to use it when needed. It doesn't slow your speed and if your VPN drops-out then your Internet connection is immediately cut-off. No chance of being uncovered. The only way to guarantee you won't be exposed would be to monitor your VPN 24//7 when you're torrenting. This way your VPN monitors itself. I use 'FastestTube' to download individual songs from YouTube as it sends you the song in a BURST so fast let them find it. I think Youtube also has a responsibility to get the copyrighted stuff off their service or they are in trouble, not the individual downloader as it would be hard to find the individual downloader particularly if they are using a VPN! Fastest tube replaces the old 'Download Helper' which they managed to sabotage so it no longer functions. You have to go to their website to download the program but it hooks up to your Youtube automatically and you don't even have to have an account with YouTube. I believe 'Download Helper' used to be an 'add-on' but 'Fastest Tube' is not and must be separately downloaded. It is awesome because some movies on Youtube can now be in 720 & 1080. You can also download your music in 320 with 'Fastest Tube' you can also just download the audio portion so you do not have to bother converting the video if you didn't want the full video. There are a lot of things which you can do to protect yourself. I do not believe you can ever be truly safe with a VPN if it is a 'free' service.
You also MUST make CERTAIN you are NOT LEAKING YOUR REAL IP ADDRESS. There is a great site which will test this for you.
Go to: www.doileak.com
The site is very informative & the test is free as are the instructions on how to shore-up any holes in your coverage. Most of the holes are the ones which allow your ISP to tell your real IP address although thankfully, most ISP's are LOATHE to give your information to these sheisters. The reason the music companies are losing money has nothing to do with pirating. It has to do with their over charging music, especially on line. I can buy a whole album with the literature, CD & jewel case for $8.00 but I have to pay $0.99 PER SONG to buy it on line and I get NONE OF THAT. They think their product is much more valuable than it really is. When they start charging you with copyright infringement for taping music off the radio or copying a cassette or CD on the player you bought which has a copier feature built in. My stereo can copy cassettes, can put an album on a cassette & using my computer I can put any of it on a CD. If I have the album it's legal. If I have the RECEIPT for the album it's legal. How many of us have a movie collection we taped on VHS from TV? Can you do that anymore using a DVD player? I don't know because my entire 3 terabyte movie collection is torrented and on EXTERNAL DRIVES WHICH I DISCONNECT ON MY COMPUTER, THEY WILL NEVER FIND ANYTHING ON MY COMPUTER. They try to tell me I can not download a movie from the Internet but can copy it from the TV and the same movie comes into my home via the same wire. There are a few too may contradictions to try & get you when you are downloading or copying entertainment material for personal use. I think it would and should be criminal if you were making a profit from it but if you are getting it for your own personal use then I have no issue with it. When it costs me $150.00 to take a family of 9 to the movie for a new movie tell me the reason I should feel one damn bit guilty for downloading the movie on torrent when I just spent a whole days wages taking my family to see it. I remember when admission was $0.25 for a matinee & $0.50 for the evening shows and a movie was an inexpensive way to take your family for a night out. Today it costs $15.00 just to get in the door. Then you've got the unbelievable prices at the popcorn & candy concession. Big handbags are the answer. I bring everything but the pop-corn or the kids would go without. It is just out of the budget for a large family. They have a lot of nerve acting as if they are the injured party. What a joke. The actors & performers get paid princely sums to perform, can afford million dollar homes. Do they really do anything which is so much harder than you do to provide for your family? I think not!
I now return control of your computer to you. Thanks for putting up with a little bit of venting but I read what they think they are going to get-away with and just got steamed!
Aint got ten pence good look with that, take a cheque ?
This article brought to you by VPN companies ! Why not just use a proxy? that's what I do...Or switch up your downloading every 8 minutes or so. Takes more time but its safe.

That's awesome. I just checked my HDD, 46,460 songs times 150,000 equals 69,690,000. But guess what, every one of those artists that I supposedly "stole" from did not lose anything and most are rich already (except DMX), the person or persons who did lose out are interscope records, deathrow records and so on, the people whom did nothing to make the music, but here is the kicker, how much do you think MPAA and RIAA have spent in the last years on hiring spies and trolls, the pirating detection infrastructure, paying employees, buying equipment, lobbying costs, lawyers fees and court case fees? Believe it or not, it exceeds more then what they're bitching about, they spend hundreds upon hundreds on millions of dollars just so they can bust a 9 year old girl in the UK for downloading one CD on her winnie the pooh laptop, but YIFY gets to walk scott free, all the while flipping us the bird and turning his back on us, unlike Kim.com, or hell even me, the time comes, I wont stop UTR or the Uniteam, hell no, I will go out with a bang, literally. Thanks for listening.

As much as I hate to necro threads, brianic2012 has no idea what he is talking about. Logging sales and logging internet traffic are TWO different things and the last time I checked buying a VPN is not an admission of guilt. Besides most VPN's that have no logs what so ever also gives you the option to buy monthly via bitcoin.
On a lighter note: For Mp3's I have been using Soulseek ( ALL OTHER SOULSEEK SITES ARE FAKE!!!) ever since audiogalaxy closed down in 2002. It's a music collectors mecca! Super rare vinyl only releases, old school demos etc. I was able to find flexi disc punk releases (its those weird small paper/plastic like records one would find in either magazines or national geographic mags in th e70's and 80s "whale sounds" and shit like that) or releases that only 500 were printed...you will find what you're looking for...
150K for one song? Are they F***** insane, which court is going to apply those fines to a person for one song? ps MY pc has been hacked officer?
Well, I ain't got no damn $150K but they're free to 150 copies of my special $1 proteine ashake, straight from the source, if they want to collect :p
|Well i would be in HUGE debt if they ever caught me..as i have thousands of sounds from just the last couple of years..as i am sure alot of us download alot off this site. They need to focus on more important things than torrenting. They make enough money. I use PIA so i feel secure||
